prostate enlargement (bph)

prostate enlargement (bph)

As we get older, many men experience the symptoms of prostate enlargement, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

While it’s a common condition that affects many men as they age, as urologists we understand how concerning it can be to experience these symptoms.

The prostate gland, which is responsible for producing part of the ejaculate fluid, can become enlarged over time, which, because it is around the outlet of the bladder, can then cause a variety of symptoms.

Fortunately, we have a number of effective treatments available to help you manage BPH symptoms and improve your quality of life.

What are the symptoms of BPH?

What are the symptoms of BPH?

The symptoms of an enlarged prostate:

- Frequent urination, including waking overnight to pass urine,
- Difficulty starting or stopping urination,
- Weak urine flow and the feeling of not being able to fully empty the bladder.

These symptoms can be uncomfortable and disruptive and can even lead to more serious complications such as urinary tract infections or bladder damage.

How can BPH be treated?

How can BPH be treated?

One of the most common treatments for BPH is medication to help manage symptoms by relaxing the prostate, or even reducing the prostate size. However medication may not always be effective or may cause side effects. In these cases, a surgical approach may be necessary.

There are several long-standing surgical options for BPH, including transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), which involves removing excess prostate tissue, or laser surgery to vaporise or remove the prostate tissue. These procedures are generally well-tolerated and can provide significant relief from symptoms.

At Restore Urology, we also specialise in minimally invasive surgical techniques such as Rezum Stream Therapy and the UroLift procedure, which can offer patients a quick recovery time and minimal side effects.
