prostate enlargement (bph) treatments

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)

TURP is a well-established procedure used to treat urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate gland.

Symptoms include frequent urination, difficulty starting urination, weak urine flow, and the sensation of not being able to completely empty the bladder.

TURP is an effective treatment option for men with moderate to severe urinary symptoms related to an enlarged prostate. It involves removing a portion of the prostate gland that is blocking the flow of urine through the urethra.

This can improve urine flow and reduce symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty starting or stopping urination, weak urine flow, and incomplete bladder emptying, as well as reducing the number of times you need to get up overnight to pass urine.

About Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland. It involves the removal of excess prostate tissue that is causing bladder obstruction and urinary problems such as frequent urination, weak urine flow, and difficulty emptying the bladder. The procedure is typically recommended when medication and other non-surgical treatments have failed to alleviate symptoms. During the procedure, a small instrument called a resectoscope is inserted through the urethra and used to remove the excess prostate tissue. TURP is performed under general or regional anesthesia and usually takes about 1-2 hours to complete. Patients are typically discharged from the hospital within 1-3 days after the procedure and can return to normal activities within 2-4 weeks.
Patients may feel some discomfort during and after the TURP procedure, but the level of pain can vary among individuals. After the procedure, patients may experience some pain and discomfort in the area, but this can usually be managed with pain medication. Overall, while patients may feel some discomfort during and after the procedure, the benefits of TURP often outweigh any temporary pain or discomfort.
At Restore Urology, we have extensive experience in performing TURP procedures using the latest technology and techniques. Our team of highly skilled urological surgeons use advanced tools such as bipolar energy sources, which allows for precise and effective removal of prostate tissue while minimizing the risk of complications.

This is a minimally invasive procedure that involves placing small implants in the prostate to lift and hold the enlarged tissue out of the way, which opens up the urethra and improves urinary flow. The procedure can be performed in an outpatient setting and typically has a short recovery time.

Rezum Steam Therapy
This is a newer procedure that uses the natural energy of steam to shrink excess prostate tissue. It involves injecting sterile water vapor into the prostate, which causes the cells to die off and the tissue to shrink. Rezum is also minimally invasive and can be performed in an outpatient setting.

GreenLight Laser Therapy
This is another minimally invasive procedure that uses a laser to remove excess prostate tissue. The laser is delivered through a small fiber that is inserted into the urethra, which vaporises the tissue and opens up the urethra. GreenLight Laser therapy is often performed on an outpatient basis and typically has a short recovery time.
